The skin strip is then cut into individual follicular unit grafts under microscopes which is a very sophisticated procedure. FUT requires extensive surgical training of the surgeon and the surgical team. It requires expertise to remove the skin strip without transecting follicles at the wound edges and close the wound in a way that causes minimal scarring. The main advantages of FUT are:
- FUT provides us with the most permanent hairs of the donor area.
- FUT can provide with more hairs compared to FUE in cases where there is a very narrow donor area.
- Follicle transaction rate (wasted hairs) is lower than FUE.
- FUT is more effective than FUE in difficult hair types such as afro-hair.
- It leaves the rest of the donor area untouched for future sessions and thus provides significantly more hair over multiple sessions compared to FUE alone.
- FUT can be done without shaving and this is probably the most common reason for patients preferring FUT over FUE. Preparing long-haired grafts can also be possible. These advantages may be important for female patients or male patients who prefer avoiding shaving.
